Gregory Cutter
Professor of Oceanography, Old Dominion University
I have been on the faculty at ODU for the last 43 years rising from research assistant professor to full professor and serving various roles including Assistant Chair, Graduate Program Director and most recently, ODU’s Assistant Vice President for Research Compliance. My research interests include: Processes affecting trace element speciation and distributions in natural waters and sediments; air-sea transport and exchange of gases and trace elements; paleoceanographic tracers; analytical methods for aquatic chemistry; computer modeling of biogeochemical processes. Funding for these efforts comes for sources as diverse as NSF, EPA, DoI, DoD, DoE, State of California, Tennessee Valley Authority, and Electric Power Research Institute. I belong to, and have served on, many committees for AAAS, AGU, ASLO, CERF, Geochemical Society, and TOS. I have over 100 peer-reviewed publications, served as the Editor or Associate Editor of 4 journals (not including editor for 6 special volumes), and was a member of UNOLS’ Fleet Improvement Committee where I lead the preparation of the latest Global Ship Scientific Mission Requirements. In this respect, I have been on 39 major oceanographic expeditions, serving as Chief or Co-Chief Scientist on 16 of these. For the last 18 years I have also visited Capitol Hill to advocate for the geo- and ocean sciences.
