The Center for Ocean Leadership as an organization connects, convenes and supports collaboration among and between ocean science and technology institutions and federal agency partners. Our affiliated institutions are from academia, non-profit groups, industry, aquaria, and philanthropic organizations. COL deliver a suite of services, such as:

  • provide a conduit for information about events, opportunities and issues concerning ocean science.
  • advocate for funding for Ocean science before Congress and the Administration and connect elected and appointed officials to constituent institutions when possible.
  • staff interagency working groups and committees and connect our affiliates to those activities as appropriate.
  • support ocean education. For example, COL leads the National Ocean Science Bowl, the only high school level science competition with an ocean focus and thousands of participants with 25 regional partners.
  • organize ocean exploration forums to bring together government and private interests mapping and exploring our ocean planet.
  • connect to the UCAR education, research and data assimilation and accessibility programs with potential applications to ocean science and technology

Become an Affiliate

Ocean science institutions are invited to affiliate with COL.

As a COL affiliate member:

  • In the first year, pending the formation and subsequent recommendation of the COL Strategic Advisory Committee, affiliates will not incur fees or dues.

  • Affiliated institutions will elect members of a new COL Strategic Advisory Committee (SAC) to guide the future direction of the Center.

  • Input from affiliated institutions and guidance from the SAC will shape the future direction of COL including new initiatives in service to the ocean science community, information needs of community members that COL can provide, opportunities to connect with new partners in ocean science, and to raise the profile of the ocean science community to policymakers and the public.

To join COL, please complete the COL Affiliate Form.  In addition to affirming affiliation for your institution you will be asked to list at least one point of contact and identify the voting representative for your institution. Your organization will then be included in all future COL communications.
